Offline Like all mediums, there is no black-and-white spectrum in the realm of terrible-ness. One can and probably will argue of the decline of music quality and innovation in recent years, which doesn't necessarily translate to all music produced in modern times. Personally speaking, I disagree with the notion that all modern music is terrible, and there are plenty of good music out there if you look hard enough. Though you shouldn't ask recommendations from me, as I don't listen to nearly enough modern music personally to make a solid claim. Except for video game music, because lord knows I've played one too many video games.?

Doesn't really stop my wandering mind.

I agree with this. I quite like Lana Del Rey and there is a ton of unreleased material out there to listen to, The Pretty Reckless also have some decent stuff. Outside of those and Paramore there is very little that interests me.

Offline Some good albums I've heard released this year, in case anybody needs recommendations -
Charli XCX -?How I'm Feeling Now?- Written and produced almost entirely in lockdown, in my opinion this album will be the definitive statement of that specific time. It's also probably Charli's most cohesive work to date, perfectly balancing her poppier sensibilities with the weirder PC Music/100 Gecs influenced experimental stuff without any of the lame features that have dragged her past stuff down for me.?
The Strokes -?The New Abnormal?- Definitely a return to form for The Strokes, and probably the first time they've mixed their new wave leanings with their garage rock roots in a way that's consistently satisfying.?
Fiona Apple -?Fetch The Bolt Cutters?- I've fallen pretty much head over heels for Fiona's music over the past few months, and this album is a wonderful culmination of her progression so far. It's very DIY and raw, with some amazingly inventive percussion, and the songwriting is just as hard hitting.?
Shabaka & The Ancestors -?We Are Sent Here By History?- Having followed London jazz star Shabaka's career for a few years now, this new album is definitely one of the best things he's put out to date. Very spiritual and powerful.
Gil Scott-Heron & Makaya McCraven -?We're New Again?- A jazzier reimagining of GSH's 2011 swan song.?

I second this 100%. Been a longtime fan of The Strokes (and tbh basically everything Julian Casablancas touches) but unfortunately their previous album was very hit and miss. The New Abnormal is definitely a return to form, and as you say, perfectly blends an Electronic Sound while staying true to their original gritty rock style.?

Are you into Kacey Musgrave's stuff at all? She's another pop-country artist not unlike Taylor (who I also have a soft spot for), but I'd say perhaps a more relaxed sound. She's also a very talented songwriter; this one in particular is one of the best pieces of social commentary through music I've heard.?

Offline Pretty much, yes if it gets anywhere near the charts which seem to comprise what 10 year-old's stream these days or Simon Cowell peddles. It's auto-tuned to within an inch of its life, usually features a rap instead of a middle 8 that has absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the song and is sounds like every other piece of crap in the charts. Its formulaic, its banal, and its a sad reflection on what safe, music-by-numbers garbage the music industry peddles. The last 'modern' song by a 'modern' artist I truly liked was Pharrell Williams' 'Happy' which is a few years old now.
Away from the charts however and there is still good stuff being produced by long-standing artists, my find of the year is Lee Fields and The Expressions, with Lee being around the business since 1968. And PP.Arnold's comeback album is very good too. I tend to buy late 60's or early 70's stuff that I missed or didn't appreciate at the time, a golden era for music. Old fogie rant over!

Not all modern music is terrible but I heard this one song the other day that was god awful. Before the quarrantine I saw a new band that was fantastic. That’s the way it goes.?

She doesn't use ghost writers. She writes her songs and collaborates with other people and they are credited for it. George Martin, George, and Richy could be considered ghost writers on a lot of Lennon/McCartney songs. That doesn't change the fact that John and Paul were talented songwriters. Also nobody releases two albums a year anymore so that's irrelevant. The Beatles weren't even doing that at the end.?

Yes, Taylor has been a happy part of our family for the last 12 years. One of the few artists that we listen to the entire album instead of just tracts. Her live show was a lot of fun and a perfect first concert for tweens. I thought her performance on One World was tops, as she always makes an effort to bring it and a song about taking her mom to the doctor was shattering. Walt - sometime check out her latest Netflix special, her creative process is inspiring. LPD, I've listened to Folklore everyday for a month and still can't get enough!
